Following a Lost Phone Up a Ski Lift

A small moment that changed the day

I was teaching on a school ski trip in early December when one small moment turned into a really good reminder of why preparation matters so much on educational visits.

Partway through the day, a fifteen-year-old student came over and told me he’d lost his phone. Somewhere on the slopes, between lifts and runs, it had gone missing.

As soon as he told me, I opened TripAid and could see the phone’s live location.

That changed everything.

What TripAid showed us in real time

Rather than guessing or panicking, we could watch exactly what was happening. The phone wasn’t stationary. It was moving. We could see it travelling up a ski lift, about three minutes ahead of us, and then coming back down a green run.

It was immediately clear what had happened. Someone had found it and picked it up.

The biggest advantage in that moment wasn’t just knowing where the phone was. It was what that knowledge did for the student. All the stress disappeared instantly. I explained that the phone clearly wasn’t lost on the mountain – someone had it, and the chances were they’d ski to the bottom and hand it in at the information office at the end of the day.

I told him we’d keep an eye on the location, and when it stopped moving, we’d go and get it.

That reassurance made a huge difference. He relaxed, clipped back into his skis and carried on with the group, knowing there was a plan and that his phone was almost certainly coming back to him.

From a staff point of view, it meant we didn’t have to drop everything, split the group or retrace routes on busy slopes. Supervision continued as normal. The situation was managed calmly, quietly and safely.

Sure enough, later that afternoon the phone stopped moving at the bottom of the mountain. We headed over, and it had been handed in exactly where we expected.

The real value of good systems on school trips

It was a small incident, but it stuck with me. On school trips, things go wrong – that’s unavoidable. What makes the difference is whether those moments create stress and disruption, or whether they’re handled calmly and with confidence.

That afternoon on the slopes reminded me that the real value of a good school trip safeguarding app isn’t just solving problems. It’s removing anxiety for students and freeing teachers to focus on what really matters: keeping everyone safe and making sure the trip is enjoyed by all.

If you’d rather spend your next ski trip enjoying the slopes with your group than retracing runs looking for a missing phone, get in touch at tripaid.co.uk and find out how TripAid could work for your school.
